Cover crops app
A cover crops app to assist in the composition planning and seeding rate of cover crops.
By Dennis Weigelt Pedersen
In 2022, the Innovation Centre for Organic Farming published the app Cover Crops (Efterafgrøder) as part of the project Vigorous Cover Crops.
The app can assist farmers and advisors in planning of their cover crops. The app contains a catalogue of cover crop species. For each species you can find information on winter hardiness, seeding depth, thousand-kernel weight, root type and much more. The app can provide a basic knowledge of the species which gives the optimal basis for decision making in the selection of cover crops.
Besides the cover crop catalogue, the app has a mixing module which makes it possible to put together cover crop mixtures, as well as to calculate a proposal for the seeding rate of the different species in the mixture. A few parameters, such as time and method of planting, as well as a proportional distribution of the species in the mixture, must be provided. The built-in calculator will then estimate the seeding rate of the different species. Each mixture can be saved locally in the app and later edited, copied, or exported by email.
